Scarlet Runner beans are native to the mountains of central America and was historically grown as a food crop for the beans and thick starchy root. In modern times it's typically grown as an annual for it's showy red flowers that attract humming birds and pollinators. The plants are quick climbers and will grow up a bean pole or trellis, and set the most flowers in the early summer and fall. Picking off the developing bean pods will increase flower production, which are also edible.
